The Buchanan Team Behind the Departure of the SS United States
PHILADELPHIA (February 2025) - On February 19, the SS United States was towed from the Port of Philadelphia bound for her final resting place as part of an artificial reef off the west coast of Florida. The Buchanan trial team of Craig Mills, Andrew Hope and Reeny Kelly were instrumental in bringing about this widely-reported event.
The fastest ocean liner ever built, the United States enjoyed a brilliant but brief career, carrying Presidents, Hollywood celebrities and millionaires in high style before losing the battle for international passengers to air travel in the 1960s. Buchanan filed suit to evict the ship after its owners defaulted on a berthing agreement with our client Penn Warehousing & Distribution and refused to vacate the pier. Having first secured a trial verdict evicting the United States, Mills and Hope participated in settlement discussions that helped facilitate its sale to Okaloosa County, Florida, where it will be deployed as a haven for scuba diving and sport fishing.
