Recent Developments in Crypto Taxation

Sahel Assar moderated a panel titled "Recent Developments in Crypto Taxation" at the ABA Section of Taxation: 2024 May Tax Meeting.

The panel discussed the Securities and Exchange Commission’s recent approval of Bitcoin Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) that has created a flurry of activity on exchanges. This panel addressed the U.S. federal income tax implications and reporting requirements for cryptorelated ETFs as well as current developments in taxation of digital assets, including the implications of the emergence of trading in ETH-W (Ethereum Proof of Work) after the “merge” in which the main Ethereum blockchain shifted from proof of work to proof of stake.
