How James Helps Clients
With more than 20 years of experience as an Administrative Patent Judge on the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), James (Jay) offers clients strategic insights and arbitration services relating to intellectual property matters. He has judicial experience in all areas of PTAB jurisdiction, including appeals, interferences, America Invents Act (AIA) trials, and management as a member of the Senior Executive Service as Vice Chief Judge, Deputy Chief Judge, and Acting Chief Judge of the PTAB.
Prior to serving as a PTAB administrative judge, Jay worked as in-house counsel in the petroleum additives industry and consumer products industry. In both industries, he managed global intellectual property portfolios, patent drafting and prosecution of United States and foreign patent applications, and litigation strategy and support. He began his career in private practice at a boutique firm focused on intellectual property matters.

Jay works closely with clients to understand every facet of their business and industry. With this knowledge, coupled with his significant experience in patent office trial procedures, he helps clients build effective IP strategies.
Outside the Office
In his free time, Jay enjoys amateur radio, woodworking, sailing and spending time with his family and their pets.
