Legal emancipation of minors, like that sought by 14-year-old Modern Family star Ariel Winter, is often an avenue of last resort – and for good reason, according to Buchanan Ingersoll & Rooney Entertainment Shareholder David A. Gurwin.

As Gurwin, who is not involved in the case, explained to Fox News, “unscrupulous managers will sometimes pressure a minor to seek emancipation if the minor’s parents won’t agree to sign the management agreement so that the minor will then have contractual capacity to sign.”
