Joseph A. Dougherty, CEO and managing director of Buchanan, said the killing of Floyd by police earlier this year made the firm "take a good hard look at ourselves" about whether or not it was doing all it could to support diversity and inclusion in its workforce.

"What I'm looking for from Lloyd is fresh eyes, to build upon those efforts to partner with our clients on their diversity initiatives and really develop a more robust structure and program for all of our lawyers to get the best training, so we get to retain them and they get the best opportunities as they move forward," Dougherty said in an interview Tuesday.

"Being able to have someone devoting all their time to addressing those challenges—that's the true value of having a full-time CDIO," Freeman said. "It's absolutely necessary to place those time and resources to those issues because it shows your attorneys at all levels that that's a value that the firm has."
